MARCH 2000
Highlights
The Successful 33rd California Farm Equipment Show

The 33rd annual California Farm Equipment Show and International Expo held Feb. 8th through the 10th in Tulare, CA will be remembered for its sunshine and rain, huge crowds, high-ranking federal ag officials and international flavor. It will also be remembered as the last California Farm Equipment Show, for closing on Thursday evening marked the beginning of a new era for this show -- now to be known as World of Ag Expo of Tulare, CA.

The huge event featured an important first that reflected its national and international prominence. On Tuesday U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman visited and addressed the gathering at the opening ceremonies. Glickman recognized the importance of California's ag economy and the value of the show in helping to keep America's farmers on the cutting edge.

The international tone of the opening ceremonies carried through the show over the next three days. Many exhibitors were surprised and excited about the diversity of the audience, with attendees coming from all over the world. As of Thursday afternoon, nearly 900 attendees from 53 nations had registered at the International business center. Because of the global and diverse audience the show attracts, many exhibitors use the opportunity to introduce new products.

With the opening of the California Farm Equipment Museum/Learning Center & International Trade Center, attendance at next year's show should be even greater. The new, year-round facility, now under construction, will house a museum, learning center and International Trade Center. The venue will be used to create new global markets for the products and commodities grown in California and to host the many international delegations that tour the Valley.

Hidden Advantages in that Latté

Next time you indulge by ordering that tall cup of latté remember that you are enhancing your daily intake of calcium. Starbucks Coffee, with over 2600 outlets serving gourmet coffee drinks, uses more than $100 million worth of dairy products a year, and the chain's volume is growing at the rate of 25 percent. A popular requested item is a 12-ounce latté, which is made from 11 ounces of milk (whole, unless skim is specified) and 1 ounce of coffee. So enjoy the experience, and appreciate the benefits of milk.
